Fast Start Propels #4 Orange Past Duke

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 4 Syracuse scored the first six goals of the game and never looked back in a 15-8 victory against Duke in the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday. Emma Tyrrell scored three-straight goals during the scoring run on her way to a season-high five.

Kate Mashewske recorded 11 draw controls, helping Syracuse to a 20-7 advantage in the draw circle. On the defensive end, Katie Goodale caused three turnovers and picked up four ground balls to go along with three draw controls.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange (3-2, 2-0) offense was firing on all cylinders from the opening whistle as Payton Rowley scored 29 seconds into the game Rowley's goal was the first of six straight for Syracuse as it took control early. Tyrrell tallied the final three goals of the run before Caroline DeBellis found the back of the net for the Blue Devils (3-4, 0-2).

The squads traded goals in the second quarter before back-to-back goals by Joely Caramelli and Tyrrell sent 'Cuse to the locker room with a 10-3 lead at intermission.

Syracuse led by as many as 10 in the second half before Duke scored four of the final five goals of the game for the 15-8 final.

OF NOTE
The Orange defense held Duke well below its average of 16.0 goals per game and limited Kate DeSimone, who entered the game as the national leader in points and goals, to just two goals.

Olivia Adamson finished with four points on two goals and two assists. She now leads the team in points (24) and goals (15).

Three members of the Orange scored their first career goals in the win, including sophomore Superia Clark and freshmen Kaci Benoit and Joely Caramelli.
