Orangewomen Beat Syracuse AAU in Final Exhibition Tune-Up

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse junior guard Rochelle Coleman scored 19 points, including five three-pointers, to lead the Orangewomen to a 64-51 victory against Syracuse AAU in SU's final exhibition game on Thursday, Nov. 13, at Manley Field House.
Coleman was one of three Orangewomen in double figures. Junior guard Krystlayn Ellerbe finished with 14 points, six assists, four steals and four rebounds. Ellerbe played a team-high 34 minutes. SU played without senior guard Julie McBride, who missed the game with a thigh injury. Freshman guard Lauren Kohn scored 12 points, all from behind the three-point line. Junior forward Chineze Nwagbo recorded five points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Syracuse scored 36 of its 64 points from beyond the three-point line. The Orangewomen knocked down 52.2 percent of their long-range attempts (12-23). Four players made at least one three-pointer.
Former Penn State standout Shelby Thayer got AAU on the board first with a trey less than a minute into the game. Coleman made her first triple 53 seconds after that. SU took a 10-7 lead with 14:25 left after five straight points by Ellerbe. AAU earned a one-point advantage, 13-12, midway through the half, but freshman Kohh sparked SU's offense with the first two of her four threes as the Orange went on a 14-2 run to open up a 23-15 advantage. AAU cut Syracuse's edge to six, 26-20, with less than three minutes left, but Coleman finished the session with five straight points to give Syracuse a 34-24 advantage at halftime.
AAU pulled to within six points, 34-28, less than three minutes into the second half, but SU managed to extend its lead to 16, 48-32, midway through the period. AAU scored the next 11 points to make it a five-point game, 48-43, with 5:30 to play. Ellerbe made a pair of free throws and Coleman buried a three to open up a 10-point lead, 53-43, with 4:18 left. Kohn made her second two treys to close out the scoring and to give SU the 13-point victory, 64-51.
Thayer led AAU with 17 points. Danene Hopson, a former Orangewoman, had a game-high 12 rebounds along with nine points and three assists. Paula Moore-Claude, also a former SU player, scored nine points and snagged four rebounds. Denise Becher, a Pittsburgh alum, had eight points, six assists and three steals. Sue Ludwig, a former SU standout, finished with four points, five assists and five rebounds.
Syracuse begins the regular season at Binghamton on Nov. 22 at 1:00 p.m.
