
SU Battles Maryland For Spot in the Semis

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- No. 8 Syracuse goes for its second straight trip to the national semifinals when it takes on second-ranked and undefeated Maryland on Saturday at Noon in College Park. Opening draw for the quarterfinal contest is set for noon. The Orange enters the game with a 14-4 record, while the Terrapins are 20-0 this season.
The game will be broadcast live on WJPZ 89.1FM in the Syracuse area and on SUathletics.com. Tickets for Saturday's game are $6 for adults and $3 for students from both Universities, youth and senior citizens.
ORANGE IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
Syracuse is making its eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Orange has an all-time record of 4-7 in the national tournament. Syracuse made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2000, in just the third year of the program. That was the first of four consecutive at-large bids for SU. After missing the tournament in 2004, Syracuse returned in 2005. The Orange earned automatic bids to the tournament in 2007 and 2008.
SYRACUSE-MARYLAND SERIES
The meeting between Syracuse and Maryland marks the ninth time the two schools have faced each other. The Orange has never beaten the Terrapins, as Maryland holds an 8-0 advantage in the series.
ABOUT TODAY'S GAME
Today's game is the 199th in the history of the Syracuse program. The Orange began play in 1998. Its first game was on March 14, 1998 at Maryland ... Head coach Gary Gait returns to Maryland where he served as an assistant coach for nine years. During that span he helped guide the Terrapins to seven national championships. One of the student-athletes he coached during his tenure was current Maryland head coach Cathy Reese ... The Orange is making its third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. SU advanced to the second round of the 2007 tournament, where it lost to Northwestern. In 2008, Syracuse defeated North Carolina, 13-11, in quarterfinal action at the Carrier Dome.
