Syracuse Defeats #10 Northeastern in Season Opener, 4-1

BOSTON, Mass.—A dominant third period led the Syracuse ice hockey team to a 4-1 victory in its season opener at No. 10 Northeastern on Friday night at Matthews Arena. The Orange (1-0-0) scored the last four goals of the game, giving the Huskies a loss in their first game of 2013-14.

Nicole Renault and Sadie St. Germain each tallied two points in the contest, while Nicole Ferrara and Jessica Sibley each netted a power play goal.

Kallie Billadeau earned her first win of the season, stopping 27 shots along the way and allowing just one goal.

The Syracuse offense out-shot Northeastern 30-28 and dominated in the faceoff circle, winning 45 of 66 tries.

NU was the first to score in the contest, off a Maggie Brennolt shot that got through traffic in front of the goal and through the legs of Billadeau, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead late in the second period.

The Orange played from behind for exactly one minute in the second before Ferrara netted the game-tying goal on a power play with 3:29 to play in the period. Caitlin Roach intercepted a pass and skated in on the goal and passing into the slot. Her pass hit the skate of Melissa Piacentini before landing on Ferrara's stick and heading into the goal.

Syracuse entered the third period on a mission, scoring three goals in under ten minutes. St. Germain scored the game-winning goal with 14:35 to play in the final stanza, giving the Orange a 2-1 lead that NU would not answer. St. Germain rebounded her own shot to gain the advantage, using a pass from Nicole Renault to get it done.

The Orange scored again just over four minutes later on a power play. Freshman Jessica Sibley earned her first collegiate goal, taking a shot from the faceoff circle off a pass from Nicole Renault to pad the Syracuse lead.

Northeastern very nearly cut into the SU lead when a puck trickled toward the goal line but Billadeau was able to save it before NU could rebound the shot.
