SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 5/6 Syracuse netted the first 12 goals of the game and went on to a 21-6 victory against Cincinnati on Sunday, April 14 in the Carrier Dome. The win extended the Orange's winning streak in BIG EAST regular-season play to 17, which is the longest in school history. The streak dates back to the 2011 campaign.
"I thought it was a solid team effort today," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "Everybody had an opportunity, which was nice. Everyone played well. We stayed focused, were mentally prepared and played well."
Junior Alyssa Murray led the Syracuse (9-3, 5-0) offense with six points (3g, 3a), while seniors Taylor Nims and Tori Praino and freshmen Erica Bodt and Kayla Treanor had two goals apiece. Overall, 15 different players scored for the Orange as it tied its season high in goals scored.
Senior Michelle Tumolo started the offensive outburst when she scored on an assist from Murray at the 27:15 mark. Junior Amy Cross then scored on an assist from senior Bridget Daley before returning the favor, assisting on Daley's goal with 22:15 on the clock. Bodt added an unassisted goal and sophomore Kailah Kempney extended the scoring run off an assist from Murray. Murray scored three times in the first half and her goal at the 3:11 mark put the Orange up 12-0. Cincinnati (6-7, 0-5) broke up the shutout with 13 seconds left in the first half when Megan Bell found the back of the net.
The Orange offense continued to click in the second half as Nims and sophomore Ella Thorpe added goals after intermission. The Bearcats netted three of the game's next four goals before sophomore Paige Savia scored on an assist from freshman Kelly Cross to spark Syracuse on a 6-2 scoring run to end the game. Sophomore Loren Ziegler and freshmen Kristiana Ferguson and Vivian Curry each netted their first goal of the season during the run.
Syracuse outshot Cincinnati, 43-10, and had 23 ground balls to 16 for the Bearcats. SU also won 15-of-23 draw controls. Sophomore Kelsey Richardson made two saves for the Orange in the first half, and junior Alyssa Costantino had one save in the second half before freshman Shannon Byrne played the final 5:40 of the contest. Meg Gulmi and Jennifer Walsh each made four saves for the Bearcats.
The Orange continues its homestand on Tuesday when it hosts Cornell at 4 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Admission is free of charge.
