PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 5/8 Syracuse scored the final four goals of the game to come back from a two-goal deficit to defeat Rutgers 10-8 on Sunday, April 7 in Piscataway, N.J. With the victory, the Orange extends its BIG EAST regular-season winning streak to 15 games.
Freshman Kayla Treanor led the Syracuse (7-3, 3-0) offense with three goals, while senior Michelle Tumolo had a goal and two assists.
The Orange led 4-3 at halftime but Rutgers (8-4, 0-3) opened the second half on a 4-1 scoring run to take a 7-5 lead at the 22:46 mark. Treanor was awarded the ball on the end line after a Rutgers turnover when Scarlet Knights' goalkeeper Lily Kalata couldn't handle a high pass. Treanor raced Kalata back to the goal and found the back of the net to cut the lead to 7-6 with 21:26 remaining. Rutgers answered with Annie McGinley's goal at the 17:02 mark to put the Scarlet Knights back up by two.
Treanor started SU's decisive scoring run at the 10:35 mark when she scored on a low shot on a fast break. Senior Bridget Daley tied the score less than a minute later on a free position shot, and junior Katie Webster netted the game-winner on a free position with 6:56 remaining. Sophomore Kailah Kempney added an insurance tally on an assist from Tumolo with 1:13 on the clock for the 10-8 final.
Rutgers took an early lead with a goal 1:50 into the contest. The Orange answered with Tumolo's goal at the 26:54 mark. Treanor followed with a goal 39 seconds later to give SU its first lead of the game and freshman Erica Bodt capped Syracuse's scoring run at the 25:15 mark to put Syracuse up 3-1. The Scarlet Knights tallied two of the final three goals of the half to cut the Orange's lead to 4-3 at halftime.
Syracuse outshot Rutgers 22-21, while the Scarlet Knights picked up 21 ground balls to 12 for the Orange. Kempney had six draw controls to help SU dominate in the circle as it won 17-of-20 draw controls. Sophomore Kelsey Richardson recorded six saves for Syracuse, while Kalata had four for the Scarlet Knights. Megan Clements led the Scarlet Knights' offense with two goals and an assist.
After four consecutive games on the road, the Orange returns to the Carrier Dome next weekend for a pair of BIG EAST contests. SU hosts Louisville on Friday, April 12 at 6 p.m. and Cincinnati on Sunday, April 14 at 1 p.m.
