Over the past few weeks, head coach Ange Bradley has continually announced her class of 2017. Previously, she announced Kailey Smith, Emma Claire Stewart, Audrey Matthew, Florine Hogendoorn, Claire Cooke, Borg van der Velde, Sarah Luby, Isabelle Sumichrast and Emma Likly.
Chiara Gutsche, who played with both the U16 and U18 German National Teams previously, is set to join head coach Ange Bradley's Orange in 2017.
"Chiara is a skillful player with good field vision and understanding of the game," Bradley said. "I expect her to make an immediate impact."
Gutsche played for Spandauer HTC from 2007-12 before joining TuS Lichterfelde Hockey Club under head coach Anja Mulders for the last-four seasons.
"Chiara is a tactically flexible player," Mulders said. "She can quickly grasp a play and maneuver a counter-attack. She is incredibly nimble which makes her good at making gutter shots on the run. She is very ambitious and ready to contribute to the success of the Syracuse team."
A native of Falkensee, Germany, Gutsche attended Immanuel Kant Gesamtschule for high school. While there, she played on the TuS Lichterfelde club squad and earned five East-German Championships from 2012-17 in indoor and a fifth-place finish in the German Championship in 2016.
Gutsche chose to come play for the Orange because she connected well with the coaching staff and felt as though the mentality of the program was the best fit for her and Gutsche's passion for the game is what drew her to want to continue her development at 'Cuse.
"I always want to keep developing," Gutsche said. "I never want to lose the fun of the sport that I fell in love with as a little girl when I was 9-years-old."
Gutsche looks at previous Syracuse teams and wants to emulate the success of the program when she joins the program.
"I want to be part of a team that is an example for following ones," Gutsche said. "I want following teams to look back at ours and say ' wow, I wish our team would have such great spirit like that one had! I wonder how they created that.' and as consequence try harder to become a union."
Gutsche is also looking forward to playing top-level competition in the ACC.
"I think it's great," Gutsche said. "I believe it is the only way to keep the same level up. It is so important to surround yourself by teams that have good players so you never stop developing."
